Dubai is glamorous, futuristic and full of unforgettable experiences. But because it’s located in the UAE—where cultural expectations differ greatly from Western norms—travellers often make simple mistakes. Here’s how to avoid them and enjoy Dubai stress-free.
1. Dress Respectfully in Public Areas
Swimwear is for beaches and pools only. In malls, souks and public spaces, cover shoulders and knees.
2. Public Affection Is Limited
Holding hands is fine, but kissing or hugging in public is frowned upon and may bring unwanted attention.
3. Alcohol Is Restricted
You can drink only in licensed venues like hotel bars. Public drunkenness is illegal.
4. Don’t Photograph People Without Permission
Especially women and children. It’s considered very impolite.
5. Taxis Are Safe, but Metro May Be Faster
Dubai’s metro is modern, cheap and avoids traffic—but note the separate women-only cabins.
6. Fridays Are Holy Days
Some shops open later on Fridays. Plan morning activities accordingly.
7. Expect Heat Like You’ve Never Felt
From June to September, Dubai’s temperatures can be extreme. Always carry water and avoid midday activities.
